Interview with Brodi Ashton, author of Everneath

We’re thrilled to have the fabulous and funny Brodi Ashton in the pub today!

Her book Everneath (B+B/HarperCollins) was just released in stores this week and it’s one of our favorites.

EVERNEATH

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned—to her old life, her family, her boyfriend—before she’s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance—and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.

As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.

Everneath is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton.

1. Now tell us, Brodi: which one of your characters would you most want to kiss?

Ack! I would say Jack, but then I’d feel a little too much like a cougar. So I will go with the Professor.

2. Hahaha, cougar…you’re more moral than us, I suppose (we all picked underage characters—OOPS!). Let’s say you were transported into your book—which scene would you most want to reenact?

That’s exactly how I write books, by the way. I act out the scenes in my head. I live there. But the scene I’d most want to reenact is a scene at the very end (or the beginning, when you think about the timeline) where Jack stops Nikki in the hallway at school and confronts her about her feelings for him.

3. Oooh, sounds romantic and delicious!! So, you act out scenes…what’s a typical writing day for you then?

Get up, make tea, take it to my study to write. Take a break for lunch. Possibly shower, but probably not. Write some more.

4. Sounds about like the rest of us. Workworkwork!! When you do take breaks, we assume you read. 😉 What are you reading now?

Since I’m in the middle of revisions, I’m avoiding outside reading right now, but the last book I finished was Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Loved it.

5. We loved that too! So…let’s a hot guy wants you to be his queen, and all you have to do is leave everything behind. What do you say?

Um… thanks, hot guy, but no thanks. I have kids, so that sort of changes everything.

6. Kids, schmids. 😉 Okay, fantasy #2: If you could spend a night at the pub with any 3 authors (alive or dead) who would it be and why?

Louisa May Alcott, so I could confront her about how Laurie should’ve ended up with Jo and not Amy, because Amy is a brat.

Cormac McCarthy, so I could ask him how he developed his writing style, and could he please teach me.

And Abraham Lincoln. Because he’s always who I’d invite to the “Three dead guys and you” luncheon.

7. Nice mash up! Can we come along?? But wait–Pub Brawl!!!!! What weapon are you wielding?

Brass Knuckles, with the words “Ever Yours” spelled out. Then people would read them, and be all, “Ever yours? What a sissy girl!” right before they lost an eye. Know what I mean?

Thanks so much for having me!! And to all you readers: If haven’t read Jodi’s Incarnate, you have to, because it is incredible. 🙂

Aw thanks, Brodi! We really appreciate your time and wish you all the best with Everneath!

Now, to celebrate Brodi’s lovely interview and the release of her even more fabulous debut, Everneath, we’re giving away a copy! (A copy that just might be signed… ;))

All you have to do is leave a comment, telling us what YOU’D do if you were given a shot as a hot king’s (or queen’s!) bride (question #5). Then, fill out the form below! The contest is opening internationally, and we’ll contact the winner a week from now!

Awesome interview! I’m dying to read this book now…and hehehe, you’re not a COUGAR! Because if you are, then so am I…:P I totally picked a 19-year-old character as the one I’d want to kiss. OOPS!

And what would I do if I was given a shot to be a hot king’s bride? Hmmmm….I’d probably pass. I’ve already got my own “hot king” here on earth. 😉

Oh Sooz, you must read it. It’s WONDERFUL. I loved EVERNEATH.

  2. Cassie Jan 26 2012 at 6:13 am #

    Gosh, that’s a hard decision. I’m not married, I don’t have kids…but…

Just because he’s hot doesn’t mean he’s gonna treat me right. Nope. Giving me an ultimatum like that is a deal breaker.

And I love Everneath’s cover. Can’t wait to get the chance to read it. 😀

I’ve been so looking forward to Everneath–inspired by a story that’s always fascinated me!

If a hot king came calling? Well, right now it’s 11pm and I’m on a quick break from revisions–if you’d asked me before I tackled the chapter three rewrite I’d have run off with him for sure, but I just found the chink in its armor I was looking for. I’m going to stay here, triumphant!

EVERNEATH is wonderful! I hope you love it too!

  4. Sandi Jones Jan 26 2012 at 7:30 am #

Sounds like a great premise. And what a gorgeous cover! I know my students will all want to read it. But…not until I read it first!

      Jodi Meadows Jan 26 2012 at 8:21 am #

Hahaha! Awesome! You will make them so jealous!

  5. Nhi Jan 26 2012 at 7:38 am #

I’d be like thanks, but I ain’t interested (unless their kingdom has unlimited amount of internet and I can nab whatever I want WHENEVER I want…). He may have the smoldering looks of a sex God – but he could have the personality of a rock, or just using me or just like – PUUUUUUUUUUUURE EVIL. Or something. *shift eyes*

    • Nhi Jan 26 2012 at 7:40 am #

Also I can’t wait until this book came out! Awkward moment when I thought it was already released because of the 9487928475928375923875938579+ glowing reviews I’ve read about it, and then I realized that they all probably received ARCs of it so yeah…

EVERNEATH is out now! Quick, go buy it! 😀

  6. katherine S Jan 26 2012 at 7:39 am #

Like Cassie, that’s a very hard decision. I’m not married, but I do have a daughter. With that said, I couldn’t leave everything behind.

  7. SupaGurl Jan 26 2012 at 7:57 am #

    Great Interview!!

I say if your NOT 33 like me and married with 2 kids…. SURE go for it I would have when I was 18 or 19 🙂

  8. Silent_pages Jan 26 2012 at 8:22 am #

If leaving ‘everything’ does not include my novels, then sure! I’d go.

If he DID expect me to leave all my writing behind, he’d have another think coming. I’ve got too much to work on without starting from scratch. XD

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 8:25 am #

That’s a good point. I wonder if Brodi will tell us whether it means novels, too . . .

  9. Jenna DeTrapani Jan 26 2012 at 8:22 am #

Haha. I read teen lit and am well over the age of 18, therefor the occasional accusation of being a cougar is inevitable. I don’t care, these fictional guys are hot-hot-hot! ;)~ Great interview!

  10. Kayla B. Jan 26 2012 at 8:44 am #

Great interview! If I did not have my daughter, I would gladly leave and go rule the less fortunate. Come to think of it, I think my little diva may have made a similar deal with someone. She does seem to rule the nest at times…

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:48 pm #

Obviously some kind of deal was made. You might want to check out the details…

  11. Brandi O'Bannon Jan 26 2012 at 8:44 am #

I don’t think I could leave everything behind no matter how hot he is. If I’m 5 years older than him does that make me a cougar in training?

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:48 pm #

I think it’s still an acceptable age difference. Maybe.

  12. Katja Jan 26 2012 at 8:47 am #

I liked the interview. I don’t know why I don’t read them more, because all authors always give funny answers.
If a hot king asked me to leave everything behind and be his queen? Well, since I’m almost 18 and have a pretty boring life. I’d make a run for it 😀 I mean, what the hell, at least it wouldn’t be boring 😀 Ok, I’m not so reckless in real life…

I can’t wait to read Everneath (the cover is gorgeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!).

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:49 pm #

We try to make all the Pub Crawl interviews entertaining. You should totally read all of them. 😉

      EVERNEATH is AMAZING!

  13. Alyssa Jan 26 2012 at 8:47 am #

Awesome interview! I LOVE the premise of Everneath. Nikki sounds kind like a modern-day Persephone, and I’m a sucker for anything having to do with Greek mythology. I can’t wait to read it!

I agree with Cassie. He may be hot, but that doesn’t mean he has a good personality, and I think I’d miss my loved ones too much.

    • Alyssa Jan 26 2012 at 8:47 am #

      kind of*

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:50 pm #

Then you will LOVE EVERNEATH! It’s such a great twist on the Persephone story!

  14. Dani Nguyen Jan 26 2012 at 9:18 am #

Hmm I think I’d have to pass too, but it would definitely be tempting. Hard decision!

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:50 pm #

Seriously hard. Who doesn’t want to be queen?!

  15. Ann Jan 26 2012 at 9:22 am #

I like the sun too much to be trapped in the underworld with a hot- but likely crazy guy with ulterior motives for being with me… So I’ll pass…

  16. Sharmaine C Jan 26 2012 at 9:53 am #

Hard question… I think I’d probably say no. I can’t just leave my sisters and friends and everything. I may love him, but I love my family as well.. Sorry hot guy, family first.

I love the interview! Had so much fun while reading it! Thanks for the giveaway!

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:52 pm #

It would definitely be hard to leave family behind!

  17. Ana Lucía Jan 26 2012 at 10:15 am #

Right now I’d probably say yes. I have nothing to lose…I love my family and all but hey I need a life! haha but since everything is fiction I don’t feel THAT guilty.

Nice interview, I’m dying to read this book! I’ve only read great things about it, fingers crossed! 😀

    • Ana Lucía Jan 26 2012 at 10:23 am #

oh and by the way, thank you for making it international!! I can’t find these books here. So excited, again fingers crossed! 🙂

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:53 pm #

      Being queen WOULD be fun!

  18. Jessica Jan 26 2012 at 10:25 am #

I would love to win this book! It sounds amazing.

  19. Jessica Jan 26 2012 at 10:26 am #

I would probably say yes. 🙂

  20. Lori M Lee Jan 26 2012 at 10:31 am #

I read an ARC of this book and I LOOOVED it. And Brodi is so awesome too.

Tempting, but it’s not possible for me to leave my family behind. And anyway, I have my own king already even if some days he’s a royal pain =P

  21. Erin Bowman
    Erin Bowman Jan 26 2012 at 11:27 am #

Haha. Love the cougar comment. I think we are all guilty of falling for far a character a bit too young for us. Great interview, ladies!

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:54 pm #

Let us not think of how much younger fictional boys are….

  22. Hannah Jan 26 2012 at 12:37 pm #

I would say no to a hot guy if I had to leave my family. I don’t think I could be royal anyway.

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 26 2012 at 1:55 pm #

I bet being royal is hard. People expect things of you!

  23. Jana Jan 26 2012 at 12:42 pm #

    Great question..hmm…

If a hot guy says that to me..well… I would have to say NO.. I can’t leave everything behind just because he’s hot or whatever. I can’t and won’t live my family and my friends behind just for some guy I don’t really know!

  24. Diana Jan 26 2012 at 2:39 pm #

In this moment of my life (I’m not married and I don’t have kids) I would say yes with the condition that I could left him anytime if I wanted it.
Everneath has very beautiful story and thank you for the giveaway!

YES YES YES!!!! I’m sorry do I sound to desperate!?! Kaaaay so I’m young, in school, having to do exams! Yup I would be more than happy to escape!!! Take me with YOU!!!! OMG I would do anything for a cute tiara hehehehe 🙂 Thanks for the awesome giveaway! Daughter of Smoke and Bone was great and LOL Cougors all the way! Awesome interview 🙂 Forget fictional hot guy! I’m good with the two of you 😉

  26. Hayley G Jan 26 2012 at 4:09 pm #

I would totally be on board! haha

  27. Katelyn Larson Jan 26 2012 at 5:36 pm #

I’d definitely pass. Win me over for real, don’t slap me with an ultimatum! 😉

  28. Vivien Jan 26 2012 at 5:50 pm #

Yea, I’ll take the risk. Whatever the turnout!

  29. zara Jan 26 2012 at 6:14 pm #

tough choice but I think I’ll pass. hot guys always come with some kind of trouble.

  30. Chen Chang Jan 26 2012 at 6:52 pm #

Only if the love is there. If it’s a loveless relationship…yuck.

  31. Rika Ashton Jan 26 2012 at 7:15 pm #

Hey Brodi! My friend’s been raving about your book for ages and I’m dying to check it out as well, especially if there are good looking guys involved, lol.

Okay, so if I uber-hot guy just asked me to be his queen, my answer would be….

Nope. Thanks but no thanks. King, shming…I’m not about to settle for anything less than a GOD. 😉

  32. Julie Jan 26 2012 at 9:10 pm #

    This is a tough question…

If an uber hot guy asked me to be his queen, my answer would be something along the lines of “How long would I be queen?”. For one, there’s a pretty long track record of queens getting beheaded after a while. And on top of that, it’s always fun to answer a question with a question. Maybe Uber Hot Guy would rethink his request. No one wants an annoying queen. But on the off chance that he kept asking, I’d probably say yes, as long as I can leave anytime I want. (not the the death sort of leaving, though) But then again, if we’re talking about the Uber Hot Guy from EVERNEATH, which is a retelling of Persephone and Hades, death is kind of inevitable.

So yeah, long answer short, I’d say no. (Plus, you never know. That hot guy appearance could be hiding a complete creeper personality)

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 27 2012 at 9:11 am #

Oh yes, you’d definitely want to get out of that before the beheading. That sounds…painful.

  33. Zara Alexis Jan 26 2012 at 11:17 pm #

Well, let’s see. Since this is a hypothetical question, it deserves a hypothetical answer:

If I was asked let’s say, mmm…five to 10 years ago (before I met my husband and had my children), the King looks like Theo James, and has NO back-breaking sisters I have to deal with, plus, I get my own throne, crown, a really great office, an exotic pet, and am free write and read without interruption, plus have an infinite amount of money to shop and travel, am not expected to perform any really, weird, hardcore, kinky sex, and can rule with equal power as the king to someday overthrow him—then yes—I’d say, “Take me home, I am your queen.”

Anything less than that, I know I’m better off here.

Thanks for the post and the chance at winning the giveaway!

Ugh, I’ve been DYING to grab a copy of this. WANT. EVERNEATH so sooo good <3

Oh, and I would probably be like, "um, no." I need to bring my brothers! Leave everything else behind, but not my little brothers. We must break havoc *together* 😉

  35. Meredith Anderson Jan 27 2012 at 1:16 am #

I DEFINITELY want to read this book. And really hope I win the copy because if I don’t, I’m not allowed to buy books until my TBR pile is at least less than half my height. (Which could take a while, folks.) I’m really sad that I wound up being busy on tuesday night, too! I live in Utah and I saw the launch party was being held at a bookstore that I absolutely ADORE. It would have been amazing to meet Brodi, especially because she sounds like so much fun! Fingers crossed I run in to her at some point being in the same state.

Everneath sounds brilliant. I cannot wait to get my hands on it. 🙂

    Mac
    <3

OH YEAH! As for what I would say, probably something along the lines of, "sorry, I can't because I've already got this GREAT guy, but thanks for the offer!" Unless it was Chaol. Or Etienne. Then I would probably say HELL YES. (SHHHH! Don't tell my Wonder Boy!)

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 27 2012 at 9:13 am #

If you don’t win, you should make an exception for EVERNEATH! Why yes, I’ve been called an enabler before. Why do you ask?

  36. Laura Hughes Jan 27 2012 at 7:08 am #

I’m dying to read this book, thanks for the contest!! Considering I wrote Prince William fan-fic as a teenager (ya, how sad is that, lol), I’d be tempted to say yes. But…my fiance has a hot accent and never complains when I abandon him for hours to write, so I think at this stage of the game, I’d have to say no 🙂

    • jodimeadows
      jodimeadows Jan 27 2012 at 9:13 am #

Definitely stick around for the hot accent. 😉

  37. Jenelle R. Jan 27 2012 at 7:32 am #

Erm… probably not. I mean, he’d want me to be happy if he loves me, right? But leaving everything behind won’t make me happy…

Thank you soo much for the giveaway! I’ve been dying to read this one! Everneath looks soooo amazing!!!!

  38. Asia M Jan 27 2012 at 5:30 pm #

I’m always in for an adventure! That’s probably caused me some trouble in the past, too… But better learn from one’s mistakes than never risk anything!

Thanks for the recommendation and the giveaway!

  39. Brandon Scott Jan 27 2012 at 5:43 pm #

I say no… family is the most important thing in my life, and then comes friends… I can’t just leave all that for one person… royal, or not. 😀

  40. annejude Jan 28 2012 at 4:04 am #

Even though he would be the sexiest guy in the world and perfect in all ways, he wouldn’t be worth leaving my family, friends and my life.

    Thank you for the giveaway:)

  41. Krispy Jan 29 2012 at 2:49 am #

As tempting as that is, I don’t know if I could leave everything behind because everything is EVERYTHING. It’s so all or nothing, and I don’t like those choices. 😛

    Thanks for this giveaway!

  42. Sarah S Jan 31 2012 at 2:19 pm #

Thanks for the interview! Everneath sounds intriguing — the cover alone would tempt me to pick it up!

  43. Imogen Feb 1 2012 at 1:46 am #

I wasn’t too sure, but it’s looking more and more like i’m going to read it, it sounds very interesting! I agree with the others, the cover by itself would be enough to catch my attention 😀

  44. Christina Kit. Feb 1 2012 at 6:12 am #

I would totally depend on what my life was like and if the guy was hot and nice (or Cole:))
