WHAT’S LEFT OF ME Cover Reveal!

by

Kat Zhang

Hi guys, Kat here! :D

I’m soo excited to share the cover of WHAT’S LEFT OF ME with you today!! I know everyone says they love their covers, but I can’t help it, I’ve got to say it, too–I LOVE my cover.

I’ve been sitting on it for months now, literally (okay, not literally literally). This was apparently the first cover concept the designer came up with, and they decided to just stop there because it couldn’t get any better ;) My editor emailed it to me in the middle of a summer road trip I was taking with Susan and Savannah, and I ogled it on a smartphone for the next few hours until Susan pulled over into a Starbucks so I could access the internet and ogle it on my laptop screen. (reason #93432545 for writer friends. they understand cover joy)

I’ve been dying to share it with everyone ever since, and finally, I get to! Okay, I’ll shut up now so you can actually see the cover:

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t…

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable–hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet…for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

Isn’t it gorgeous?? There’s a UK summary, too, which you can check out on Goodreads :)  WHAT’S LEFT OF ME is also now available for pre-order on Amazon! Hooray :D

I hope you guys love the cover as much as I do!

Finally, in order to celebrate beautiful covers, I’m giving away one of the following books to one lucky winner! These are all 2012 debut books (that have already been released recently) whose covers I personally find gorgeous. I tried to include a variety of genres :) Whoever wins the giveaway can pick any one book out of the following, and I’ll send it to them!

The giveaway is open internationally and ends one week from today :D

Kat Zhang loves traveling to places both real and fictional–the former allows for better souvenirs, but the latter allows for dragons, so it’s a tough pick. WHAT’S LEFT OF ME–about a girl with two souls–will be released by HarperCollins 9/18/2012. You can learn all about Kat at her site, or listen to her ramblings on twitter.

    Oh my, it’s gorgeous :O

For me, a well-designed book cover is balanced (not too much content only one side of the cover) and simple. And the font should be nice, too :) What I love about the cover of “What’s Left of Me” is the great use of space, and how balanced the composition is: the book title is balanced out by the image, and everything is so uncluttered and clean :)

Thank you, Sally! I love the great use of space on the cover, too! :)

    I love your cover!!

What I look for in a cover is: gorgeous colors, an interesting focus, and then, when I’ve read the book, real symbolism or significance.

    Yours has all of that!

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 12:07 pm | Permalink

:D I’m glad the cover fits all the things you look for in a cover! Thank you!!

    This cover is so awesome!

The thing I generally look for in a book colour is something eye-catching. I also love it when the cover is actually related to some sort of theme or situation, etc. in the book and isn’t just a dress or something thrown onto it (think Shatter Me for instance. Brilliant book, but the dress doesn’t make any sense to me. Juliette doesn’t even wear a dress in the book)

The book cover to What’s Left of Me is just so, so, so cool. I can’t stop staring. :)

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 12:08 pm | Permalink

Thank you, Jocie! Personally, I can’t stop staring at it, either ;)

    That’s absolutely beautiful! :D

That cover is a beauty! Simple, not confusing, eye-catching. Perfect.

  6. Posted February 17, 2012 at 6:53 am | Permalink

Kat, this cover is SO BEAUTIFUL, but I think the thing I like best about it is at the very top… your name. :) CONGRATS! <3

Hehehe, I do love that part, too ;) <3 <3 Thank you, Julie!

Oh my… Kat, KAT. It is beautiful. I mean, every single part of it is beautiful, you must be over the moon! The font’s incredible for the title, and I LOVE the font for your name, and the idea behind the artwork just blows me away. HOW did you survive sitting on this and not telling the world? Just, wow.

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 12:10 pm | Permalink

I am very much over the moon!! There was a lot of quiet squee-ing going on ;) Thank you, Amie!

Beautiful cover! Stunning! I love the colors and the great artwork.
What do you like in a book cover? The first thing…colors! And I also like mysterious book covers, covers that screm *read me* just by looking at them. :)

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 12:11 pm | Permalink

Thank you, Giada! Great colors can really pull a person to a cover, can’t they? :)

  9. Posted February 17, 2012 at 7:50 am | Permalink

    Lovely cover!

I generally like bright catchy colours and a good font is a must.

  10. Posted February 17, 2012 at 8:00 am | Permalink

Kat, that’s a gorgeous cover! I can’t stop looking at it.

What I look for in a cover can’t really be pinned down. I’m drawn to things that are different, things that stand out from the pack, things that I stare at for way longer than I should. I’d say your designer hit the mark on it. ;)

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 2:46 pm | Permalink

Thank you so much, Meredith! I am ready to regale my designer with chocolates and flowers ;D

  11. Posted February 17, 2012 at 8:07 am | Permalink

Woohoo!! So, so, *so* beautiful. Easily my favorite cover of 2012. ;)

I kind of go for the unusual, so many covers in any genre look the same. I like to see an actual work of art in the cover. A piece that I can imagine buying and hanging on my wall, because looking at it gives me pleasure.

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 12:13 pm | Permalink

There are some covers out there I would definitely buy and hang on a wall :) Thanks for dropping by the release!

What a lovely cover! I love the color and the print and the crop of her face! It’s just gorgeous. Congratulations!

  15. Posted February 17, 2012 at 8:52 am | Permalink

I love the cover! Covers are quite important to me because it determines if I actually want to read a book. I love simple and symbolic covers!
Congrats on an amazing cover, love it!

  16. Posted February 17, 2012 at 8:52 am | Permalink

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD I THINK I’M GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK RIGHT NOW. It’s so gorgeous! I adore those kinds of sans serif fonts, and the contrast with the slightly messier author name font is fabulous, and THE COLOURS. Wow. And the amazing profile made out of the image! Carries the whole hybrid feel fabulously. Eeeeh, Kat, I’m so happy for you. <3 :D

  17. Posted February 17, 2012 at 8:58 am | Permalink

I love it! It’s gorgeous. The colours, the symbolism, even the typeface and how it was arranged. Congratulations!

  18. Posted February 17, 2012 at 9:28 am | Permalink

The cover is gorgeous! Very simple but beautiful :) I can’t imagine how excited you were to see it for the first time.

  19. Posted February 17, 2012 at 9:34 am | Permalink

I love it! :D It’s such a gorgeous cover and it sounds very relevant to the book! I’m also kind of obsessed with the cover model’s eye lol

  20. Posted February 17, 2012 at 9:40 am | Permalink

I like it when there’s some concept behind the cover, that corresponds well with what the book is about. I can tell the cover of WHAT’S LEFT OF ME is easily one of these. :)

Other than that, I like covers that are simply pretty – pretty dresses, pretty sky, pretty anything. I’m shallow like that, ha ha. ;)

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 2:50 pm | Permalink

I’m all for a pretty cover as well, so if that’s shallow, we’ll just make a club ;) Hehe

  21. Posted February 17, 2012 at 9:52 am | Permalink

SOOOO GORGEOUS, Kat! I love it. I think it matches the tone of the book so wonderfully. And I love those silver-metallic hues! The silhouette masking the girl. AHH! <333

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 2:50 pm | Permalink

I’m so glad you think it matches the book, Erin! <3 Thank you!

  22. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:01 am | Permalink

I love covers like this that make you just sit and stare at it for hours. It took me a few minutes to see the other face in this one! However, I’m also just a huge cover-whore for something pretty and shiny. Unique is also a great bonus.

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 2:53 pm | Permalink

The first time I saw it, it took me a little while, too! :)

  23. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:08 am | Permalink

Ha! It took me a couple minutes of staring before I noticed the duality of the cover! It’s like a secret – but not ;-)

What do I look for in a cover? WHAT’S LEFT OF ME is a great example! I love the font, the picture, the silhouette, and the use of space. One of my favorite covers from 2012 is BORN WICKED: eye-catching font, pops of color, a beautiful girl… I love it!

The premise of WHAT’S LEFT OF ME sounds really intriguing. I am adding it to my GR List now :-) Thanks for another great post!

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 2:57 pm | Permalink

BORN WICKED is a gorgeous cover, isn’t it? :D I’m so glad you find WHAT’S LEFT OF ME intriguing!

    Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:14 am | Permalink

I love it, Kat! It’s sheer awesome :) And if possible, it’s increased how much I want to read WHAT’S LEFT OF ME!

On the whole I like covers that relate to their story in some way. I tend to be drawn to books without a person on the cover, because I love being able to imagine characters for myself. If there is a person, it better be for a good reason, and I definitely get think WHAT’S LEFT OF ME fit that criteria. It seems like a great way of demonstrating that Eva and Addie are hybrids. :)

Congrats, Kat! Your cover is gorgeous!

    • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:41 pm | Permalink

Thank you so much, Katelyn! I know what you mean about liking to imagine characters for yourself :)

  27. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:33 am | Permalink

    I love it! :D

On covers with pictures, the originality and quality of the picture usually gives the cover its edge… But I also like covers made up purely of writing that play with fonts. They’re usually quite cool.

    • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:42 pm | Permalink

Ooh, I like those, too! :) And yay! I’m glad you love it!!

  28. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:34 am | Permalink

I like my covers to have a lot of colour and texture. I’m usually a sucker for a cover with a girl in a beautiful dress! :)

    • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:43 pm | Permalink

:D Yes, texture! I hadn’t really thought of that, but I do love books with that matte feel.

  29. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:35 am | Permalink

The cover looks amazing. I had a quick peek at the blurb, and now I can’t wait to read it :)

  30. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:39 am | Permalink

That’s such a gorgeous and unique cover! I love the juxtaposition of the actual face and the shadow-y one — and that color palette! So much love.

There isn’t a single thing I look for in a book cover. But I do love covers with soft color palettes. :)

    • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:47 pm | Permalink

I love the two faces, too! And yes, I share a fondness for soft color palettes :)

  31. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:39 am | Permalink

I agree whole-heartedly! That cover is gorgeous.

  32. Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:44 am | Permalink

Kat, it’s great!!! I like the way there’s a jigsaw piece of a person. The gradient intrigues me as well. Ahh, I have to post this on my blog…but not atm. Work, work, work!

    • Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:44 am | Permalink

Oh! And EVERNEATH is one of my 2012 favorite covers atm, too!

And INCARNATE is one of my 2012–no, one of my all-time–favorite fantasy novels!!

      • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:48 pm | Permalink

I’ve noticed that i like seeing faces on book covers, or something symbolic, something that you realize is relevant to the story after you have read the book, that’s always a pleasant surprise.
btw, i love the cover of What’s Left Of Me and can’t wait to read it :)

I’m not a big fan of BIG FACE covers. Of course, Incarnate and What’s Left of Me are exceptions b/c they are genuinely lovely :) I like covers with a sense of setting or atmosphere, covers that truly and accurately portray the content of the book.

  39. Posted February 17, 2012 at 11:08 am | Permalink

A good book cover to me needs to look high quality and I like bright colors. I don’t always like people on them just because I like to imagine the characters myself. I also like good typography and graphic design type covers. Your cover looks great. Congrats!

    • Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:58 pm | Permalink

I’m really glad you like it :) Good typography is important, isn’t it?

Looks amazing, Kat! And, like so many others have said, I love the duality of the faces on the cover – the one looking straight on and the profile. Super cool and just a little bit creepy, in the best way possible! It definitely fits with the summary of the story. I’m so excited to read it!! Congrats!

The cover is absolutely stunning. O_O I’ve seriously been staring at it on and off for the past few hours. It’s just. Wow.

Personally, there’s not one specific thing I like in covers. I like anything that a) Fits the book and b) Captures my attention. Whether it’s one of the common themes, like “girl in a dress,” or something completely different, as long as it’s visually appealing, I don’t really care. Although! One thing I do really like is raised text. I think it just adds a bit more awesomeness to the cover in general.

I like a variety of things in covers–interesting fonts, iconic images, pretty colors. Like Jayme above, it should relate to the story, which sadly doesn’t always happen.

I think a perfectly desighned Book Cover will instantly seperate that Authors books from the rest of the books in the store. It should be a cover that should make a long time fan and a noob pause and pay attention. Robbin Hobb’s books change in each country, but In Ireland (and probably the UK) I can instantly seperate her books just by glancing through the sidecovers. And that’s not even the actual cover, that’s just the spine:O

  66. Posted February 17, 2012 at 4:02 pm | Permalink

I really am a fan of so many different things in a cover, but most of all, I love when it is just a gorgeous photo that is balanced right. I don’t like when they have the pictures of girls and they cut off their faces so you can only see their mouth and similar things like that.

    • Posted February 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm | Permalink

I think good balance is important on a cover, too :)

Oh, and what do I like in a book cover? Well, it just has to reflect the overall essence of the story. After I read a book, I like to stare at the cover and look for symbolism or something that didn’t catch my attention before because I hadn’t read it yet.

  71. Posted February 17, 2012 at 4:06 pm | Permalink

That is indeed an awesome book cover!
I actually like book covers that are simple. Not too many different colours (at least not if it’s not a happy, colourful story) and only one picture – or no picture at all, like John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. That’s a timeless cover to me. Most of the time, I also prefer drawings to photos, but I think that’s because photos always reflect some kind of trend or what is seen as modern and progressive. I haven’t seen that as much as with drawings actually.

Thank you so much for this awesome giveaway!

I loove covers that have drawings instead of photos. Though nowadays only MG books tend to be illustrated like that. But hey, photos often turn out gorgeous, too, so I’m not complaining :)

It needs to catch my eye. Hard to say exactly what will accomplish that. I have been trapped by many different types. But even more than that I love the feel of the cover. Some books have that velvety touch that is just divine.

GORGEOUS!!! I look for color in book covers. If it’s colorful then I’ll probably do a double take. I’m a huge fan of every little piece of the cover being taken into consideration. Example: Wither by Lauren Destefano. I love all the extra fonts and the way it wraps around the book. Another ex: Across the Universe by Beth Revis. Penguin went all out with the book itself being embossed. To changing the penguin logo to make it ATU style. Love it. Also, I adore when a picture is on the HB underneath the dust jacket!!

I love colour in book cover designs. And as much as I hate to say it, I’ve noticed that I’m drawn to book covers with flowers. It sounds silly, but I gravitate towards books that are “pretty.” You should see how I decide which edition to buy! It all comes down to the cover. I can also tell you what I don’t like: pictures of the movie for books as book covers. I draw the line there.

I always look for something that looks well put-together. Instead of a random assortment of prettiness, I want to see something that is connected to the book. The cover is the first impression we get, and it should be directly representative of what we will find inside.

Oh wow! I adore this cover! I didn’t see it on your site when it was first announced, but found it on Goodreads last night and wow- it is amazing! Congratulations! I’m dying to read this even more now!

In a book cover I look for part of the story, once you’ve finished the tale you think, oh yeah, that is perfect for the story! When your midway through, you connect with it, and before you’ve even started you can’t wait a second longer, because it’s so intriguing!

  116. Posted February 20, 2012 at 9:06 pm | Permalink

For me, I like covers that fit the story within the book…like What’s Left of Me. I love the subtle coloring on it and the little tint of color that was added to the girl on the over (very nice). =)

A little off topic, but the one thing I do not like on my covers (especially YA) are the ones with half-naked people, most especially when that kind of thing isn’t even in the book. *shudders*

What I like about book covers is hard to say really… there’s a lot of factors that I take into account that will grab my attention and make me go “o0o0o I GOT TO HAVE IT! Gimme Gimme Gimme!!” lol … I would say: The art itself, I love anything out of the norm but I appreciate simplicity, shininess is still attracting =), the feel of the book (matte/smoothhness/or 3D feel), hmm the excerpt/synopsis on the back cover instead of a bunch of praises of the story because I care more what the book is about instead of what others think (that’s second priority), and that the cover itself isn’t too over done. ^_^ I made it sound like science huh? lol oops… but with “What’s Left of Me” cover – I LOVE IT! It has that ‘HEY YOU! LOOK AT ME!’ feel to it, and it’s simple, elegant, but has that I’m hiding something but you won’t know until you read me mystery hahaha okay, I’m blabbering. Thank you for hosting this giveaway and THANK YOU for putting up with my long comment =)

Beautiful, beautiful cover. It has a certain unique-ness that I love seeing in covers, as well as a dramatic artistic appeal. Also- and I’m not sure why- but I don’t particularly care for covers that show all of a character’s face. I’d like part of it to to be left to my imagination ;)

  133. Amber
    Posted February 23, 2012 at 5:25 pm | Permalink

The more blog posts I see about “What’s Left Of Me”, the more amped I get about its release. I use to like the artsy, abstract book covers, but I like that this one is more about the photography and the model. It really helps to have an idea of what the character looks like in your mind as you’re reading the story.

It would have been cool if the other side was the left half of the other “soul’s” face instead of just being greyed out.
But, whatever, it’s awesome. Congrats Ms. Zhang! :)

  134. Posted February 23, 2012 at 10:50 pm | Permalink

I love a cover that’s dynamically designed and features striking artwork and/or photography. If a cover looks generic or ugly, I am uninterested or even driven away. I know, I know, don’t judge a book by its cover…

  135. Lothfleur
    Posted February 24, 2012 at 7:45 am | Permalink

I like when book covers first, reflect the story (hard to see at first glance, I know!), and then, when they are appealing, nice colors, or images, something that draws attention, without being overly gaudy.
What’s left of me’s cover is beautiful, it’s clear, without being overly so, what with the font of the author’s name and the face lines cutting accross the girl’s face… (and her lashes, they’re beautiful !).

  136. Posted February 24, 2012 at 11:30 am | Permalink

A book cover should be very gorgeous and colorful, Also a book cover should be something that can represent the theme of the story, like a painting and the hidden story behind it. A cover should be something to catch your eyes before you could ever read the synopsis. The cover should lead you solve the mystery behind the pages and you will feel drawn more and more to the book. With a artistic touch a cover can have the power to make everyone spellbound and fall in love at first sight with the book.

I love when one part is shiny and the rest is matte. Also, I just love when it’s important to the story. If it’s just a pretty cover for the sake of being a pretty cover it loses something to me…

  141. Posted February 24, 2012 at 8:46 pm | Permalink

I like it when the picture would sort of inspire your imagination how a character or setting would look like! And I go crazy over their puffy pretty dresses! And sometimes they just pull me to it.. Just like how I love the cover of Everneath! It is simply beautiful:)
