Book Recommendation: STORM by Brigid Kemmerer

So, if you’re friends with me, odds are you’ve probably heard me gush about Brigid Kemmerer’s Storm at some point or another. And truth be told, it’s actually a bit surreal for me to be writing this book recommendation, because it feels like just yesterday that Brigid was emailing me this book chapter by chapter while she wrote it. And it’s even more surreal to actually HOLD this book in my hands! STORM came out last Tuesday, and I totally cleared my schedule to reread it in its final/published form. And let me just say two things: 1) It was one the best afternoons I’ve had in a while, and 2) Storm was actually EVEN BETTER than I remembered. But before I go into full gush mode, here’s a bit about the book:

Storm by Brigid Kemmerer

Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread lies about her, Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys—the ones she doesn’t want. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water—just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They’re powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

When Hunter, the mysterious new kid in town, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who’s hiding the most dangerous truth of all…

So….the Merrick brothers? I LOVE THEM. Honestly, I have zero idea how Brigid does it, because the dynamic between the four brothers feels SO REAL. Every scene with them (especially Gabriel!) left me grinning. Grinning, and totally impressed at how vividly I could picture the whole thing. What makes the entire book feel so, so believable is that Brigid doesn’t hold back or pull any punches. The characters talk like REAL people–and curse like them, too. Maybe it’s just because I have a bit of a potty mouth myself, but I really appreciated that Brigid had characters that curse (and who do it WELL, which is an artform in itself), and that Brigid wasn’t pressured to tone down the language (hooray!).

But if hot brothers and realistic dialogue aren’t enough to convince you, then let me tell you that the world of the elementals is SO NEAT. I really can’t wait to read the other books in the series, if only so I can learn more about the fascinating world Brigid created! Seriously, if you’re a fan of The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra, then the elemental powers/magic in this will be right up your alley! (Side note:  if you’re a fan of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, then the dynamic with the guys in Storm is totally reminiscent of that!) And if you’re STILL unsure if you want to pick up the book, then test out the world by grabbing a copy of Elemental, a prequel e-novella set a few years before Storm (and featuring Michael, the eldest of the Merrick brothers)!

I wish I had a more eloquent way to wrap up this review, but basically… Grab this book. You’ll read it in one sitting and smile the whole time. I promise you won’t regret it. And then you’ll wind up ACHING for the sequel, Spark (it’s about Gabriel! YAY!), which releases on August 28th!

And! Because she is super awesome, Brigid  is giving away a signed copy of Storm, so be sure to enter the contest (US-only!)! See details below!

Really, though, don’t miss out on Storm. It’s one of the best YA novels I’ve read in a while and is a true delight to read. A lot of us at Pub Crawl are big fans of Erica O’Rourke’s Torn and Tangled, and if you loved those books, then you will absolutely adore Storm!

I’d pick fire! You can protect yourself and others by using it, and also keep people who want to harm you away. It’s the scariest of all of them:)

  2. Erica Apr 30 2012 at 5:32 am #

Congrats Brigid!! I’ve been waiting a long time for this book! I would totally pick earth; I’d be a lot more creative with it!

    • Erica Apr 30 2012 at 5:35 am #

What I mean is, a lot more creative with it than what I’ve seen on TV, like Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

      • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:11 pm #

YES! I always thought earth was kinda the lamest of the elements, until I watched Avatar and Toph was SO BADASS!!!!!

    • Brigid Kemmerer May 1 2012 at 5:59 am #

      Thank you so much!!

  3. Julie Apr 30 2012 at 6:13 am #

    Oh wow, Brigid, CONGRATS!!!! <3

I would pick spirit. It’s strongest of all, without a spirit a body is hollow like an empty shell.

    • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:12 pm #

Wow! That is such a beautiful way of putting it!!! So true. 🙂

  5. Cassie Apr 30 2012 at 7:55 am #

This is a tough choice, but I would probably pick water. Or spirit. One or the other. LOL.

    • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:14 pm #

As a water sign, I feel like I *should* be water, but…I’d totally be fire, I think. 🙂 And hey! In Brigid’s world, maybe you’d be some Water-Spirit hybrid!! (…if those exist in her world, lol)

  6. Jasmine Stairs Apr 30 2012 at 7:55 am #

Oh, I think I would be fire. Not because I particularly WANT to control fire, but because my temper goes off like a rocket, and my beneficial qualities can be destructive, if I’m not careful.

  7. Hwa Sun Apr 30 2012 at 8:09 am #

I would want it to be water, just because.

  8. Amie Kaufman Apr 30 2012 at 8:58 am #

Handsome brothers AND the elements. Swoon. I will just be over here reading this book. Back later.

    • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:16 pm #

You will LOVE this book, Amie!!!! It’s right up your alley! (And omg, someone needs to write STORM/THESE BROKEN STARS fanfiction, because Tarver + the Merrick brothers would be TOO MUCH HOTNESS TO HANDLE.)

  9. SuzeW Apr 30 2012 at 9:13 am #

Choosing Fire, because, come on… s’mores on demand anyone? This sounds like a GREAT series… congrats!

    • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:16 pm #

LOL! S’mores on demand! That is the BEST reason for being a fire elemental!!! Omg. <3

If you didn’t already have me caught from talking about STORM before, or the hot guys, you had me at the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I love the dynamic between the boys in those books, but I feel like I can never tell anyone about them! (The few times I have, I’ve totally been made fun of. Sad, right?) It sounds like a GREAT series of books. I cannot wait to get my hands on it! Thanks for the amazing review.

P.S. SO looking forward to 12:00 today!!!

    • mac_v Apr 30 2012 at 10:02 am #

Oops. Forgot! I would definitely pick water. Wonder Boy and I actually had this conversation the other night while watching The Legend of Korra. 🙂

    • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 1:22 pm #

Dude, I just discovered the Black Dagger Brotherhood books and I am SO OBSESSED. I’m only on Book 5 right now, but Zsadist….Omg. His book killlllled me. I SOBBED during the epilogue. I did NOT expect to fall so madly in love with this series. I never want it to end (and, um, there NEEDS to be another Beth/Wrath book ASAP, too. I miss them). Though the series are totally different, I feel like Brigid’s Elemental series is kinda the YA version of the BDB (but with elementals instead of vamps). 🙂

      • Brigid Kemmerer Apr 30 2012 at 3:58 pm #

I love when people compare my book to BDB (three times now!!) because I am in awe of JR Ward, and I love her books. Zsadist’s book was my favorite too. Totally made me cry. And when he wrote the note at the end … OMG.

        • Sarah J. Maas Apr 30 2012 at 4:02 pm #

I kinda want to reread Zsadist’s book RIGHT NOW. But I should probs read the rest of the series before I start rereading the earlier books. (And DUDE! I am so not surprised that people are comparing STORM to BDB! It makes my day to hear that, actually!!! YAY!)

          • Mac_v Apr 30 2012 at 4:41 pm #

I didn’t expect I’d love Zsadist as much either, but I so did! I won’t lie, the book I looked forward to the most was John Matthew. He had my heart from the start… :p ugh. I want to read then all again, too!!! It feels good to know I’m not alone in loving them!

  11. Vivien Apr 30 2012 at 10:52 am #

I think my temper is too high for me to use anything but fire. Learning to control it is the key!

  12. Lisseth Torres Apr 30 2012 at 11:06 am #

I would pick SPIRIT! I consider myself a very spiritual person. I feel emotions very strongly & I always find a way to help my friends when their on the low. Thanks 4 the giveaway, great question & this book sounds amazing. Can’t wait to read it!

  13. Valia Apr 30 2012 at 1:38 pm #

Hmm, I think I’d go with earth! 🙂

  14. Lexie B. Apr 30 2012 at 6:00 pm #

Okay, first of all, I am RIDICULOUSLY excited about this book. I’ve always been an enormous fan of anything involving the elements, so I was excited enough as is; and then, the reviews started pouring in. The five stars. Over and over again. So, so many people have adored it, and I suspect I’ll join them.

As for the question, air, because more than anything, I have always, always wanted to fly away.

  16. Priscilla Shay Apr 30 2012 at 9:55 pm #

I don’t know! Avatar made me want all of them lol Have to read STORM to make final decision

  17. Hayley G Apr 30 2012 at 10:54 pm #

I’d definitely want to be Water, I think I may have been in a fish another life, I practically live in the water in the Summer haha

  18. Karen May 1 2012 at 8:07 am #

I’d pick fire. Fire is wild and dangerous and hard to control. And it can be beautiful. After reading these posts, I’m gonna have to download the j. r. ward books everybody is talking about. So little time, so many books. *sigh*.

  19. Alicia Hartley May 1 2012 at 3:55 pm #

SPIRIT, it’s the strongest and yet a body wouldn’t be able to survive without it. 🙂

  20. Ashley Loves Books May 2 2012 at 5:07 am #

I’m totally basing this off what I know about elements from Avatar: The Last Airbender hahah. I think I’d like to be spirit since it’s the core of who you are, but I’d probably be more water – I’m a water sign anyway, and I love all the different forms of it you can control (ice, steam, plain water, etc). It doesn’t necessarily have to be a defense. Besides, it means I’m essential for existence!

Thank you for doing the giveaway!

  21. andrea b May 2 2012 at 6:10 am #

I think that I would like to be Air… Mostly because I don’t really identify with any of the other elements…
I also wanted to say that I read the book in like 2 days and loved it!! I have a hard time deciding which one is my favorite brother, but I’m also very excited that the next book is coming out this year!! 😀

  22. AHM May 2 2012 at 11:39 am #

My head says Fire is the least versatile, but I just can’t help the pull! I’ve always been a charizard girl…even though I thought airbending was by far the coolest in Avatar!

Congrats Brigid, this is so great! I can hardly turn around without seeing a glowing review of Storm, and I can’t wait to read it!

  23. Kayla B. May 3 2012 at 12:07 am #

I would totally choose water, just because. I’ve heard great things about the book, and I hope to read it soon!

  24. Judit_K May 3 2012 at 11:28 am #

Perhaps air, I’d like to fly! 🙂

  25. Shortskie May 3 2012 at 9:02 pm #

I’d pick air, it’d be awesome to control the breeze and everything around it.

  26. Riz Bulatao May 5 2012 at 10:16 am #

If I get to choose my powers perhaps I’d pick water. I can’t wait to read the book!

  27. Nicholas Moore Dec 27 2014 at 4:48 pm #

Will there be movies for the Elemental Series? It would be great if there were. 🙂 Great Job Brigid!
