Interview with Beth Revis, author of A Million Suns

Today we have the amazing Beth Revis answering a few questions! We may or may not have loosened her up with extra beer and Nutella first.

Have you ordered A Million Suns yet? We’re definitely excited for this book!

Godspeed was fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos.

It’s been three months since Amy was unplugged. The life she always knew is over. And everywhere she looks, she sees the walls of the spaceship Godspeed. But there may just be hope: Elder has assumed leadership of the ship. He’s finally free to enact his vision – no more Phydus, no more lies.

But when Elder discovers shocking news about the ship, he and Amy race to discover the truth behind life on Godspeed. They must work together to unlock a puzzle that was set in motion hundreds of years earlier, unable to fight the romance that’s growing between them and the chaos that threatens to tear them apart.

In book two of the Across the Universe trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Beth Revis mesmerizes us again with a brilliantly crafted mystery filled with action, suspense, romance, and deep philosophical questions. And this time it all builds to one mind-bending conclusion: They have to get off this ship.

1. Which one of your characters would you most want to kiss?

I would say Harley, but as his character is based on a former student of mine, I find that very icky. Instead, I will say that I would most want to kiss a new character who is introduced in Book 3. (I can’t kiss Elder—Amy would punch me!)

2. We agree about avoiding icky and getting punched! So, if you were transported into your book, which scene would you most want to reenact?

I’d like to be in the scene when Harley paints Amy’s portrait. It’s one of the rare quiet moments of the book, where there’s no danger and no angst, just friends being together. I also like to see art being made.

3. Ooh, that is such a nice scene. Now, what’s a typical writing day for you?

Wake up, stumble around, and be unproductive until the coffee kicks in. Write from around 1pm to 5pm (with, admittedly, breaks online between that).

4. That sounds like a lovely kind of writing day. What are you reading now?

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood. It’s such an awesome blend of alternative history, romance, sacrifice, and paranormal.

5. Ooo, looking forward to that one! All right, now for the real question: In 300 years, a spaceship will be space-ready and they want YOU to be on the maiden voyage—but you’ll have to be put in cryogenic sleep for 300 years while you wait. What do you say?

NO WAY. Dude. That shizz HURTS.

6. *checks chapter one again* So it does. If you could spend a night at the pub with any 3 authors (alive or dead) who would it be and why?

CS Lewis—for the conversation, and so I could be an honorary Inkling.

JK Rowling—so I could get her drunk and then pick her brain about the cool stuff at Hogwarts.

Diana Wynne Jones—she seems like such a charming, magical lady, and it would be an honor to raise a glass in toast to her.

7. Great choices! But . . . Pub Brawl!!!!! What weapon are you wielding?

More beer! That’ll stop the fight and make everyone friends again.

Flawless plan!

Thanks for visiting Pub(lishing) Crawl!

    Jodi – Great interview!

Beth – I loved ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and will start A MILLION SUNS as soon as I finish reading INCARNATE! 🙂

    Thanks to you both! 🙂

  2. Jenelle R. Feb 9 2012 at 7:56 am #

Loved the interview! It was so fun reading through Beth’s funny answers! 🙂 And no, I haven’t read AtU yet, but I plan to soon!

  3. Meredith Feb 9 2012 at 8:19 am #

Thanks for the interview! I loved LOVED Across the Universe, and I’ve heard that A Million Suns is even better (if that’s even possible!) Can’t wait to read it!

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 9 2012 at 9:56 am #

I know it’s hard to imagine, but yes! AMS is even better than ATU!

  4. Erica Feb 9 2012 at 9:12 am #

I haven’t read Across the Universe yet but it’s on my shelf waiting.
My favorite sci-fi book growing up was Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I must have read it a million times! Everytime I read I pick up on something new. He’s one of the authors that inspired me when I was younger because he was so funny. His humor was quirky and unexpected and I really like that!

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 9 2012 at 9:57 am #

Don’t wait to read ATU! You will love it! 😀

  5. Erin Bowman Feb 9 2012 at 9:13 am #

Beth — Just started reading A MILLION SUNS the other day! I’m so happy to be hanging out with Amy and Elder again. (OH, and beer being your weapon of choice in a pub brawl? Priceless.)

Jodi — Thanks for a great interview 🙂

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 9 2012 at 9:57 am #

I think beer at a pub brawl is a very smart plan indeed.

Ok, so the entry box thing at the bottom of posts really confused me I couldn’t work out how to post a comment,
but now i have discovered the secret behind comment posting, hooray!

I really loved Across the Universe and read it in a couple of days and then when i checked in at the pub crawl and saw that the next one was out i was so excited i went straight to amazon but was quite sad to see that there was no kindle version of A Million Suns, is there a plan for there to be a kindle version? I bought AtU as a kindle book and being a little bit anal retentive i like to have my sets of books either on the kindle or as real books (preferably with matching covers 😉 ) so would be nice to have a kindle version of AMS, but otherwise looking forward to the next installment. 😀

  7. Hannah F-S Feb 9 2012 at 10:46 am #

I have read Across the Universe. I can’t wait to see what else can happen to Amy.

  8. Dot Hutchison Feb 9 2012 at 10:57 am #

I’ve read both and loved them, but I think my all-time favorite would have to be the Robotech series by Jack McKinney. Just so much wonderful stuff going on, deep space and near space, romance, intrigue, politics, technology, family, alien races and unexplainable forces…They’re hard to find anymore but they’re amazing.

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 9 2012 at 11:51 am #

Ooooh, I haven’t heard of those! I will keep an eye out!

  9. Katelyn Larson Feb 9 2012 at 1:30 pm #

I read ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and loved it. I can’t wait to read A MILLION SUNS 🙂

  10. Krispy Feb 9 2012 at 2:03 pm #

  13. Vanessa Di Gregorio Feb 9 2012 at 3:53 pm #

Great interview, Jodi and Beth! I just love hearing about people’s writing days, and (of course), their Pub Brawl weapon of choice 😉

  14. Emily S. Feb 9 2012 at 4:39 pm #

Awesome interview! Unfortunately, I haven’t read Beth’s books. D: It’s a sad time for college students with no extra cash for book buying. But ACROSS THE UNIVERSE has been on my To Be Read list for a while now! I haven’t read many sci-fi novels, mostly because I’m just now getting really into them. (I’m a fantasy/contemporary type of girl.) I can’t wait to be able to read both of the books!

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 10 2012 at 10:00 am #

ATU is good for even fantasy type girls. (I’m one, too.) It’s a great book!

  15. Alz Feb 9 2012 at 5:16 pm #

I read Across the Universe and though I had some issues with it, I was very engaged while reading and am curiouser and curiouser about A Million Suns!

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 10 2012 at 10:00 am #

Beth is the type of writer who just keeps improving. 🙂

Wow, thank you so much for sharing the great interview with us and giving this amazing opportunity to win Beth Revis’ books!
I love Beth Revis, and I have read all of her books that I can! I LOVED Across The Universe, however I still have not had time to purchase A Million Suns! I’m only a teenager, but I definitely look up to Beth and want to be just like her one day. 🙂
Thanks again for the contest! 🙂

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 10 2012 at 10:04 am #

So glad you love ATU! I hope you love AMS even more!

      • Madison Feb 11 2012 at 6:06 pm #

Wow, SO excited you just responded to my post. I cannot wait to read Incarnate; it looks amazing! Just followed you on Twitter; thanks again for the giveaway! 🙂

  24. Meredith Anderson Feb 10 2012 at 9:25 am #

Bah! I’ve wanted to read both of these books so badly but I haven’t had the money to get them. Sad face! So sadly I have not read any of Beth’s books. But I will. I WILL.

As for my favorite science fiction, I’m not sure! I don’t think I’ve read too many science fiction novels, so I can’t think of an answer for you! I think I need to be sure to pick some up! :S

    Wonderful Interview! 🙂

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 10 2012 at 10:05 am #

Looks like there are a few great suggestions for science fiction novels in the comments here! Those might be good places to start. 🙂

  26. Diana Feb 10 2012 at 2:01 pm #

I haven’t read any of these books yet. I don’t really like the science fiction novels but this series sounds different.
    Thank you for the giveaway!

    • Jodi Meadows Feb 11 2012 at 6:09 pm #

These are character focused and really easy to get into. I bet you’d love them!

I have read Across the Universe and loved it!

  29. Lisa Feb 10 2012 at 3:39 pm #

I have not read her books – but TOTALLY WANT TO.
